Oil-for-Food Background Information

Update for the period 24 to 30 July 1999
During the week to 30 July 1999, Iraq exported a total of 16.1 million barrels
of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $277 million dollars. Since oil exports
under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 124.1million barrels exported for
an estimated revenue of about $2.0 billion. To date, about 46 per cent of
loadings have been made at Ceyhan.
The Security Council's 661 Committee approved one additional contract for the
export of Iraqi oil. This brings the total contracts approved to 75 with a total
volume of 355.1 million barrels (200.3m Basrah Light, 154.8m Kirkuk). Another
three contracts are pending.
The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 48 contracts for humanitarian
supplies worth $335.89 million under Phase VI. To date, six contracts with a
value of $9.316 million have been circulated to the 661 Committee.
So far $1.542 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been
approved under Phase IV and $1.360 billion under Phase V. There are $56.47
million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $293.7
million on hold in Phase V.
The 661 Committee has approved $242.98 million worth of oil spare parts and
equipment in Phase IV and put $38.73 million on hold. For Phase V $59.72 million
in oil sector equipment has been approved and $82.89 million is currently on

Goods purchased under the programme continue to arrive normally: Arrivals over
the past two weeks included: 57,000 tonnes of wheat, 13,101 tonnes of sugar,
2400 tonnes of iodised salt and 3839 tonnes of powdered infant formula milk and
261 tonnes of a contract for 1500 tonnes of cheese. Other arrivals included
various pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment and full or partial delivery of
ten contracts for oil industry equipment and spare parts. To date around $80
million dollars of oil sector equipment purchased under the terms of resolution
1175 (1998) has arrived in Iraq.
