Panel discussion

ECOSOC held a Special Event in November 2005 discussed the risks of an outbreak of the Avian flu. This was the second special event in a series launched by the Council to fulfill its new mandate to “develop its ability to respond better and more rapidly to developments in the international economic, environmental and social fields” and to “support and complement international efforts aimed at addressing humanitarian emergencies.” (para. 155 (d) WSOD). This panel was meant as a follow-up to the discussion last year and focused on developments in the spreading of the Avian Flu and assessed international efforts to contain it and prevent an outbreak.
