ECOSOC 2004 High-Level
Segment
28-30 June 2004
In its decision 2003/287 of 24 July 2003, the Council
adopted the theme “Resources mobilization and enabling
environment for poverty eradication in the context of
the implementation of the Programme of Action for the
Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010”
for its high-level segment, to be held from 28-30 June
2004 in New York.
In order to prepare for and contribute to the successful
outcome of the high-level segment, the Department of
Economic and Social Affairs and the Office of the High
Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked
Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States
organized during Spring 2004 a number of preparatory
events to allow for an in-depth examination of the theme
in terms of attaining the overarching goal of the Brussels
Programme of Action to eradicate poverty and reach sustained
economic growth and sustainable development in the Least
Developed Countries.
On 17 February 2004, the Council held a meeting which
featured a number of high-level keynote addresses roundtables
on the mobilization of resources and the creation of
an enabling environment for poverty eradication in the
context of the implementation of the Programme of Action
for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010.
On 17-18 March 2004, the Council held a one and a half
day meeting which focused on resources mobilization
and the creation of an enabling environment for poverty
eradication in the context of the implementation of
the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries
for the Decade 2001-2010 as exemplified by LDCs based
on their national experiences with the participation
of high-level policy makers.
A
report by the Secretary-General on the theme for
the high-level has been issued.
