UN Police (France)

Mr. Laurent Le Briero

Warrant Officer (Adjudant) Laurent Le Briero, a national of France, worked for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as part of its Operations and Monitoring Pillar Joint Operations Centre, where he was responsible for coordinating operations with police, military and civilians.

Born in Quimper, Bretagne, he was part of the Foreign Operations Group of the Gendarmerie d’Outre-Mer (GOPEX). Until 2007, Laurent had served as a Brigade Commandant in the Gendarmerie in Saint Philbert de Grandlieu in the Loire-Atlantique area in western France.

Laurent had previously served as a “gendarme départemental” in GO PEX missions abroad. From August 1997 to February 1998, he was posted in Zagreb, Croatia, and from March to December 2004 in Ploce, Croatia. French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux expressed his sadness after the confirmation of Laurent’s death, adding that 100 gendarmes had been mobilized and sent to Haiti for search and rescue operations. “Our whole police forces are mourning,” underlined the Minister, adding “my first thoughts go to his family and his loved ones to whom I convey all my support and compassion in these particularly painful circumstances.”

Laurent was posthumously awarded the “Chevalier de l’ordre national du mérite.” His body was taken to France on 26 January. He was buried the following day.

Laurent is survived by his wife Jessica and their three children.
