Mr. Fernando Henrique Cardoso, President of the Federated Republic of Brazil (as host country of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development), and H.E. Mr. Albert Gore, Vice-President of the United States of America (as host country).

Agenda for development: report of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group of the General Assembly on an Agenda for Development (A/51/45) [96 (b)]

Statements were made by the representatives of Brazil, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Guyana, China, Canada, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Japan, Malaysia, Peru and the Republic of Korea.

The General Assembly adopted the draft resolution contained in paragraph 7 of the report of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group (A/51/45) (resolution 51/240).

Statements in explanation of vote were made by the representatives of Argentina, Malta, the United Republic of Tanzania (speaking on behalf of the Group of 77 and China), the Netherlands (speaking on behalf of the European Union and

of Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia), the United States, Lebanon, the Sudan, Guatemala and Gambia.

The President made a statement.

Statements were made by the Vice-Chairman of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group, H. E. Mr. Percy Metsing Mangoaela, Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations, and H. E. Mr. Michael John Powles, Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations.

The Assembly decided to conclude its consideration of sub-item (b) of agenda item 96.
