UN Postal Administration Issues ‘United Against Racism and Discrimination’ Stamps in Observance of International Day, 21 March

The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) announced today the release of new “United Against Racism and Discrimination” stamps to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (observed annually on 21 March).

UNPA worked with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to issue the stamps.  The Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice, adopted by UNESCO, reaffirms that “All human beings belong to a single species and are descended from a common stock.  They are born equal in dignity and rights and all form an integral part of humanity.”  This text appears on the stamp sheets in English, French and German.

The stamp artwork is from the UNESCO Master Class Series against Racism and Discrimination, which seeks to empower students to become youth champions in their schools and communities, and to spread awareness on how to deconstruct the social and economic mechanisms underlying racism and discrimination.

In addition to the stamps, which are issued in denominations of $1.20, SwF 2.00 and €1.80, a souvenir card will also be released with the following statements:

Secretary-General António Guterres:

“Together, let us unite to end racism and discrimination in all its forms.  Everyone should enjoy a sense of belonging and safety and have an equal opportunity to contribute to the success of our shared future.”

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay:

“Combating racism is part of our commitment to human dignity.  This fight for peace, as the Constitution of UNESCO reminds us, will be won first and foremost in the minds of men and women, for it is in the minds of men and women that the ‘intellectual and moral solidarity’ of humankind must be founded.”
