On Friday, 5 May, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, from Kenya, to take part in the eleventh high-level meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region.

The United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic, in its ongoing support to the Government and the national disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and repatriation process, recently donated vehicles and office equipment to help build the third mobile team conducting disarmament and demobilization operations.

The Secretary-General has extended the mandate of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon from 1 March until 31 December to complete non-judicial residual functions and ensure its orderly closure. Mandated to conduct the trials of those accused of carrying out the 14 February 2005 attacks in Beirut, its work is coming to an end.

In Burundi, the United Nations has allocated $1 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to help 340,000 people in areas affected by Rift Valley fever. The viral disease primarily affects livestock, a large component of the economy which accounts for 14 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.
