The United Nations human rights office today urged Cambodian authorities to release five human rights defenders who have been in pretrial detention for one year, and whose detention was just extended for an additional six months by the investigating judge.

The absence of communication with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, especially military-to-military channels, was dangerous, the Secretary-General warned the Security Council today, emphasizing the need to lower the risk of miscalculation or misunderstanding.

The Security Council decided this morning to extend until 24 April 2018 the mandate of the Panel of Experts for the committee monitoring sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and expressed its intent to take appropriate action on a further extension no later than 24 March 2018.

The Secretary-General, in his first field visit, arrived in Somalia earlier today to highlight the ongoing risk of famine and cholera faced by millions in the country and appeal for international support.  More than half the population is in need of humanitarian aid and 300,000 children are acutely malnourished.
