Peacekeepers fallen in 2007
Every day, in field operations around the world, men and women serve under the flag of the United Nations to build and maintain peace, to relieve human suffering, and to promote human rights and sustainable development. With integrity, commitment and courage they meet humanity’s greatest challenges, over-coming any fears for their personal safety or security. Tragically, in this noble endeavour, there are those who make the ultimate sacrifice. In honour of their memory, we dedicate ourselves to continuing their mission, at Headquarters and in the field. We share the grief of their loved ones and pledge ourselves to ensuring that their sacrifice in the service of the United Nations will not have been in vain.
THE SECRETARY-GENERAL'S MESSAGE FOR MEMORIAL TO FALLEN UN PEACEKEEPERS 29 MAY 2008
The record of United Nations peacekeeping is a badge of honour not only for the UN, but for humankind itself.
For sixty years, peacekeeping operations have responded to the worst of human instincts with the best of human efforts. They represent a unique contribution to international peace and security. They have relieved suffering and reconciled warring parties. They have reduced tensions and created space for diplomacy. Today, the UN has more operations, and more men and women in the field, than at any time in our history. Despite setbacks and difficulties, this flagship among UN endeavours continues to make all staff proud to serve the United Nations.
The battlefield is a brutal place. All too often, the men and women who serve in peace operations face threats of kidnapping and other dangers. In the gravest circumstances, they lose their lives in the line of duty. More than 2,400 civilian and military personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice since 1948.
We will always remember our fallen colleagues, who gave their lives so that others could live in peace. And we will build on their legacy. I salute all the men and women who serve or have served under the blue flag of the United Nations, in the conviction that their service could make a difference between war and peace.
Ban Ki-moon
