  • Date: 14 July 2015, 6:15pm - 7:45pm
  • Location: Elilly Board Room

Organised by

African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) in cooperation with the African Union

Summary

The African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) is a stakeholder forum convened to define priorities for radio astronomy cooperation between Africa and Europe, following the selection of the African continent and Australia to host the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Radio Telescope, the world’s largest science project. It provides a framework for stakeholders from industry and academia to define research action plans across the wide range of technological areas that will be essential for the future of radio astronomy. This framework will enable major research and technological advances that will drive socioeconomic development, innovation and competitiveness in both Africa and Europe, as well as globally.

Seán Sherlock, TD, the Irish Minister of State for Development, Trade Promotion and North-South Co-operation, will provide opening remarks at the event.

The Seminar will make an important contribution to the UN 3rd international Financing for Development Conference by explaining and demonstrating the contribution of collaborative science to economic development and the need to invest in the necessary capacity and infrastructure. The Seminar will also examine the optimum policy and regulation environment necessary to combine public and private investments in scientific capacity and infrastructures to support economic and human capital growth among other forms of development.
