  • Date: 13 July 2015, 10:00am - 12:30pm
  • Location: Radisson Lalibella

Organised by

Summary

Restoring landscapes has proven to decrease poverty and increase agricultural outputs. Over 40 % of the population live in rural areas and heavily depend on the natural environment. There are 2 billion hectares of degraded lands failing to provide, leading to migration and crises which has strong economic and social implications. Therefore, we need to heal our planet to continue providing humanity. Until now, mainly countries themselves invest in restoration. To scale restoration large, institutional and private investors need to be attracted.
However, investors are hold back by being unable to measure progress and estimate risk.
A new high tech but simple free information system such as Collect Earth can negate this by enabling to count trees on a landscape, and monitor progress. WRI in partnership is conducting a two week workshop to map trees in the landscapes of the Horn of African drylands. Within few days we will produce maps and statistical analysis results that will be communicated at fora including COP21, in Paris.
The workshop will show that investor risk can be assessed and measuring rate of return is possible for private investor in restoration while at the same time increasing carbon sequestration, and improve rural livelihood.
