Summary

This Side Event will describe and further catalyze opportunities for the philanthropic sector in supporting the Post-2015 Development Agenda. There are about 200,000 foundations just in the US and Europe, and more foundations established in countries across the world every year. The largest 1,000 philanthropic foundations alone represent around $25 billion annually in financing.
The discussion will emphasize common ground between different sectors, and highlight policy choices that accelerate engagement and unlock funds – enabling and improving implementation toward shared goals. Speakers include the President of the UN General Assembly, senior government representatives from Kenya and Colombia, and CEOs and foundation representatives from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Through a series of brief inputs and moderated discussion, speakers will highlight concrete initiatives in cross-cutting investment areas prioritized by the FFD process such as essential social services, rural development, innovation, and SME financing. Impact investing will also feature, and how philanthropy and social investors can combine a return on investment with environmental, social, and governance impacts, and emerging mechanisms through which foundations blend their investments and efforts with those of governments and intergovernmental bodies. It will help Member States and the UN sustain high level engagement with philanthropy going forward.
