Harmonization and Coordination of Pan-African and International Energy Initiatives
Organised by
- African Union Commission (AUC)
- African Development Bank (AfDB)
- NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA)
Summary
At the SE4ALL Forum in New York in May 2015, a high-level group of energy policy makers, representatives of international donors and multilateral energy initiatives had a meeting that unanimously agreed that there is need for improved coordination of energy initiatives operating in Africa.
The African Union Commission, through the Department of Infrastructure and Energy, is now organizing a second round of a series of consultative coordination fora, to concretize and initiate implementation of the actions agreed upon in New York namely:
• Continuing dialogue on coordination, using available settings with an immediate view to COP21;
• Stocktaking and gap analysis of energy initiatives and interventions in Africa;
• Involvement of African main institutions (AUC, AfDB, NPCA, RECs) – with a possibility to play an anchor role as a coordination hub;
• Strengthening the capacity of SE4ALL Focal Points in Africa, and pushing for leadership efforts by host countries.
The conclusions of this meeting will feed into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit in New York 25-27 September 2015, South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC) in Cape Town, South Africa 04-07 October 2015, and eventually into COP 21 in Paris December 2015.
