High-Level Interactive Panel on Financing for Infrastructure Development and Regional Integration for the LLDCs

  • Date: 15 July 2015, 10:00am - 12:30pm
  • Location: Hilton Ballroom I & II

Organised by

Government of Zambia – Chair of the Group of the Landlocked Developing Countries and Office of the High Representative for the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS (OHRLLS)

Summary

The 32 landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) face development challenges owing to their geographical disadvantage of lacking direct territorial access to the sea and their remoteness and isolation from world markets. The construction and effective maintenance of efficient transportation links, including roads, railways, inland waterways, airlines, and ports and deepened efforts for regional integration are needed for achieving the effective integration of the LLDCs into the international trading system and the world economy. The infrastructure and regional integration needs of the LLDCs are affirmed in the Vienna Programme of Action (VPoA) for Landlocked Developing Countries adopted in November 2014. The successful implementation of the VPoA is crucial for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by the LLDCs and will depend on the quality, and quantity of technical and financial resources that they can mobilise. This session will provide a platform to raise awareness on the special infrastructure and regional integration needs of the LLDCs and mobilise international support for raising additional resources for LLDCs.
