Summary
Impact investing is defined as investments that intentionally generate social and environmental impacts in addition to financial returns. It is about harnessing the power of innovation and entrepreneurship to solve social problems and address environmental concerns. Many development challenges, especially lack of basic goods and services as well as infrastructure can be addressed as market opportunities through impact investing. According to a recent UNDP study on ‘Impact Investment in Africa; Trends, Constraints and Opportunities,’ the aggregate demand for impact Investment in Africa is estimated to be at least at US$240 billion.
This Side Event will introduce, discuss and harvest ideas and recommendations for a forthcoming Public Private Dialogue on Impact Investment in Africa, which is expected to develop an action plan and road map. The PPD is expected to be convened towards the end of 2015 by UNDP, the AUC Economic Affairs Department and the SDC.
