Summary

African financial systems have seen considerable growth in recent years. New players, products, and technology have helped broaden access to financial services and reach previously unserved populations. However, the development of markets, institutions, and regulatory structures to support the provision of long-term finance in Africa is still in its early stages, leaving many of term finance needs unfilled. The ability of African financial systems to provide term finance is essential to support expansions in the productive capacity of firms and finance the investment in infrastructure that the continent needs.

This interactive panel discussion, jointly organised by the Making Finance Work for Africa Secretariat and the African Development Bank, will:

– Take stock of the current situation with respect to long term finance in Africa – What are the key needs and where are the gaps? What are the respective roles of policymakers, DFIs, local institutional investors, and the private sector?

– Identify opportunities and challenges for the development of long term finance in Africa – What is working and what is not from the perspective of each stakeholder group? What are the opportunities and how can they work together to address them? What are some innovations in the field and how can they be replicated?

– Propose concrete actions for each stakeholder group to support the development of long term finance in Africa.
