Defining Strategic Options for the Private Sector to Support the SDGs Using the Earth Security Index
Organised by
- Earth Security Group
- Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)
Summary
Resource security challenges in developing countries are becoming more complex as water, land, food, energy and climate change pressures converge. To anticipate such risks, the private sector, which is increasing investments into developing countries in resource-intensive industries, must consider align its investment with a country’s sustainable development goals.
This session will present the 2015 Earth Security Index, a country risk dashboard that addresses the complexity and global interdependence of resource pressures in developing countries, providing the SDGs with a strategic business case, and governments with a tool to promote a business transformation agenda on a strategic level.
The discussion will provide a process to define business strategies, a series of practical examples, and policy guidance to the post-2015 implementation agenda by defining:
• Why the SDGs matter to the private sector and financial institutions
• What this means for business and banking strategies in developing countries
• How companies and governments can build partnerships on a more strategic level
• What governments can do to incentivize the right response from the private sector
