Capacity Building Workshop on Reporting to UNFF

The upcoming capacity building workshop is scheduled to take place in Nairobi from 18 to 20 March 2025 at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), Kenya. Organized by UNFF Secretariat in collaboration with FAO, this workshop will focus on improving the process of national reporting on the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests (UNSPF) and the Global Forest Goals (GFGs).

Event Overview
The workshop will address the evolving requirements for national reporting, building on earlier reporting cycles and incorporating lessons learned from the Global Forest Resources Assessment. Participants will gain insights into the new online reporting platform, review the latest developments such as the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025, and discuss the integration of various data sources to produce comprehensive reports on forest management.

Key Objectives

  • Enhance Reporting Quality: Provide national experts with detailed guidance on preparing and compiling national reports on the UNSPF implementation and progress toward the GFGs.
  • Platform Familiarization: Introduce the functionalities of the new online reporting platform and clarify any associated queries.
  • Exchange of Best Practices: Facilitate discussions on best practices and challenges in reporting, including strategies for addressing complex indicators such as degraded forests.
  • Integration of Data: Highlight the alignment between data submitted to UNFF and FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment, ensuring a unified approach to monitoring and reporting.

Background

ECOSOC resolution 2024/15 endorsed the timeline for the next reporting cycle (2024–2026). The timeline included an online reporting platform and the circulation of a standardized reporting format and explanatory notes with Member States expected to submit their national reports by June 2025. These reports will not only provide an essential basis for evaluating progress toward the UNSPF but will also serve as the foundation for developing a concise Global Forest Goals Report in collaboration with member organizations of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.
