REPORT*International Seminar on Environmental Accessibility; planning and design of accessible urban development in developing countries(Beirut, 30 November - 3 December 1999)INTRODUCTIONThe "International Seminar on Environmental Accessibility; planning and design of accessible urban development in developing countries" was organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) at United Nations House, Beirut, from 30 November to 3 December 1999. Thirty-one participants attended the Seminar, which included experts in their individual capacity from member States of the United Nations, from the United Nations system and from intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations. The Seminar was co-financed by a grant from the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability as project INT/99/D07. ESCWA organised parallel to the Seminar the "Regional Training Workshop on Environmental Accessibility" (in Arabic), which provided important opportunities for technical exchanges and joint presentations. The Seminar and Workshop held a joint closing session on 3 December to observe the 1999 International Day of Disabled Persons, which had the central theme "accessibility for all for the new Millennium". * Pre-publication draft: the document has not been formally edited and will be issued as a publication of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Western Asia. |
