Consideration at the sixty-fourth session

At the 6th meeting, on 12 October, the representative of Italy, on behalf of Belarus, Belgium, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United Republic of Tanzania and the United States of America, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the International Olympic Committee in the General Assembly” (A/C.6/64/L.5). Subsequently, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, Togo and Ukraine joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At its 10th meeting, on 15 October, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/64/L.5 without a vote. The representatives of Egypt, Argentina, China, Iran (Islamic Republic of) and Pakistan spoke in explanation of position after the adoption of the draft resolution (see A/C.6/64/SR.10). The representative of Italy spoke. The Chair of the Committee also spoke. Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the International Olympic Committee to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
