By the letter dated 29 July 2021 (A/76/192) addressed to the Secretary-General, the Permanent Representatives of Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, the Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Denmark, Djibouti, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Gabon, Ghana, Grenada, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Japan, Madagascar, Maldives, Mali, the Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nauru, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, the Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Senegal, Seychelles, the Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Vanuatu and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-sixth session.

Consideration at the seventy-sixth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 10th and 19th meetings, on 15 and 28 October 2021 (see A/C.6/76/SR.10 and 19). Statements were made by the representatives of India, El Salvador and France.

Support was expressed for granting observer status to the International Solar Alliance.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 10th meeting, on 15 October, the representative of India, also on behalf of Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, Chile, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Denmark, Djibouti, Dominica, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Grenada, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nauru, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Senegal, Seychelles, Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Vanuatu and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the International Solar Alliance in the General Assembly” (A/C.6/76/L.2) and announced that Finland, Iceland, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

At the 19th meeting, on 28 October, the representative of France announced that Belgium, Eritrea, Norway, Palau, Qatar, Sao Tome and Principe, Sri Lanka and Tunisia had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/76/L.2 without a vote.

Under the draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the International Solar Alliance to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
