By the letter dated 12 June 2024 (A/79/191) addressed to the Secretary-General, the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-ninth session.
Consideration at the seventy-ninth session
The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 14th and 29th meetings, on 15 October and 30 October 2024 (see A/C.6/79/SR.14 and 29).
Statements were made by the representatives of Brazil, Colombia, Switzerland, Italy, Viet Nam, Indonesia, Mexico, Honduras, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Support was expressed for granting observer status to the International Coffee Organization.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee
At the 14th meeting, on 15 October 2025, the representative of Brazil, also on behalf of Angola, Colombia, Germany, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Viet Nam, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the International Coffee Organization in the General Assembly” (A/C.6/79/L.4) and announced that Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Hungary and the Russian Federation had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution. At the 29th meeting, on 30 October 2024, the representative of Brazil announced that Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution. At the same meeting, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/79/L.4 without a vote.
Under the draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite International Coffee Organization to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer and would request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
