Organization: ONGAWA
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries. The life span is about 49 years. There are three medical doctors for every 100,000 inhabitants. It is estimated that about 50% of the population has no access to fresh water and/or hygiene (latrines, sewerage, etc.)
The healthcare support program which lasted six years ago in Cabo Delgado meant an investment of more than USD 6.2 million, and resulted in the Cabo Delgado´s population drastically improving their healthcare; and was able to offer more sustainable basic services at the level of rural healthcare centers by upgrading the infrastructure and technological equipment.
With a rehabilitation of the infrastructure and services grant, ONGAWA built 18 healthcare centers with fresh drinking water; drilling wells and installing hand pumps, rainwater collection systems, hygiene and sanitation public services, electricity for the health centers by installing photovoltaic panels, wireless connections and construction of landfills for medical waste.
In 2012, 6,000 people improved their living conditions with the provision of sustainable water and sanitation in the rural communities of Ancuabe and Montepuez districts of Cabo Delgado. Today, these communities have been declared Open Defecation Free (‘LIFECA’), a category established by UNICEF when all households have a latrine in use.
