Water for Life Voices

Knowledge Bank. Helping hill tribes people to maintain sustainable water in India

Organization: Local government in Umsarpang, Meghalaya, India, UNICEF.

Stream water in hilly areas is dammed and supplied to settlements by pipe. Now the residents of Umsarpang village have a consistent and predictable water supply, freeing many – mostly women – from the daily grind of water gathering.

Before they used water from ponds, wells and rivers. The pumped water is filtered, so there is no iron in it. People can wash white clothes with this water. It was set up for school children under a UNICEF scheme and now people in four villages are using its water.

The well at Sajjanpara Lower Primary School, Kamrup, Assam, India, was built in 2011. Locals use it without further purification. Even children can easily work the hand pump.
