"For me what has changed is the understanding of the significance of water to all forms of sustainable development. It’s much better understood now than it was 10 years ago. Ten years ago nobody was really talking about it, now the majority of people are really getting it.

I represent two organizations, one, AquaFed, that looks after the interests of the private sector water operators and helps them to make a contribution to the global debate and global issues. I think we’ve done a huge amount in the last 10 years of our existence to draw people’s attention the real issues that are behind the imagined positions that are put about by other people on the role of the private sector. My role with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development has been to promote the importance of water for business. If you go back 10 years there would be five or six businesses engaging in the discussions. Now over half the membership of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), probably three-quarters of the membership, are engaged in those discussions.

My immediate hope is that we will see the successful conclusion of the discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and we will see all sectors in the community working to implement those objectives in their day to day activities – business, civil society, and governments. I would like to see the 4 billion people on this planet who don’t have really proper water services in terms of water supply and sanitation, satisfied."
