Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1959, the Panel of External Auditors of the United Nations, the specialized agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency is an essential forum for coordination and dialogue among the supreme audit institutions responsible for the external audit of entities within the United Nations system.

The Panel currently carries out its mission in a particularly challenging environment. The United Nations system faces increased financial constraints, unprecedented volatility in resources and high expectations from Member States. The work undertaken as part of the UN80 initiative demonstrates he commitment to strengthen the efficiency, coherence and agility of the multilateral system.

In this context, financial discipline, transparency and the ability to demonstrate efficiency gains are becoming essential conditions for preserving the credibility and capacity for action of the United Nations.

The Panel's role is therefore more crucial than ever. Our work aims to provide independent and objective assurance, while making constructive recommendations to improve the effectiveness, economy and impact of the activities of the system.

Coordination between external auditors enables them to identify cross-cutting trends, avoid fragmentation and support greater consistency in practices. The Panel provides a unique forum for sharing experiences, harmonizing audit practices and identifying systemic risks affecting all entities within the United Nations system. Through our exchanges and technical work, we contribute to strengthening the quality of assurance provided to governing bodies and promoting a consistent approach to governance and risk management across the system.

This year, our work will focus on several priorities: strengthening financial resilience, improving cost management, analyzing the expected benefits of reforms, and developing mechanisms for cooperation and mutual recognition among entities. We will also continue to pay particular attention to strengthening internal control frameworks, digital governance and the follow-up to performance audit recommendations.

As Chair of the Panel, I will ensure that the priorities of all members are fully taken into account in our work agenda. With the support of the Vice-Chair, H.E. Mohamed El-Faisal Youssef, President of the Accountability State Authority of Egypt, and all my fellow Panel members, we will continue our efforts to strengthen accountability, governance and transparency within the United Nations system.
