Committee for Programme and Coordination

About

The Committee for Programme and Coordination is the main subsidiary organ of the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly for planning, programming and coordination. It reviews the programmes of the United Nations and assists the Economic and Social Council in the performance of its coordination functions within the United Nations system.

With regard to the review of programmes of the United Nations, the Committee is tasked to:

  • Review programme plan for programmes and subprogrammes and programme performance information on a yearly basis, as well as the plan outline on long-term priorities and the objectives of the Organization every three years;
  • Recommend an order of priorities among United Nations programmes ;
  • Give guidance to the Secretariat on programme design by interpreting legislative intent so as to assist it in translating legislation into programmes;
  • Consider and develop evaluation procedures and their use in the improvement of programme design; and
  • Make recommendations with respect to work programmes proposed by the Secretariat to give effect to the legislative intent of the relevant policy-making organs, taking into account the need to avoid overlapping and duplication.
