The item entitled “Observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventy-second session of the General Assembly at the request of Uruguay (A/72/194). The Assembly has had the item on its agenda annually since its seventy-second session (decisions 72/526, 73/537, 74/526, 75/532, 76/530, 77/526 and 78/522).

At its seventy-eighth session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its seventy-ninth session (decision 78/522).

Consideration at the seventy-ninth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 37th meeting, on 8 November 2024 (see A/C.6/79/SR.37). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a note verbale dated 11 August 2017 from the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General (A/72/194).

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At its 37th meeting, on 8 November 2024, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Uruguay had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly until the eightieth session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision under which the General Assembly would decide to defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly to the eightieth session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the eightieth session (2025).
