The item entitled “Observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventy-second session of the Assembly at the request of Uruguay (A/72/194). The Assembly has had the item on its agenda annually since the seventy-second session (decisions 72/526, 73/537, 74/526, 75/532, 76/530 and 77/526).

At its seventy-seventh session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its seventy-eighth session (decision 77/526).

Consideration at the seventy-eighth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 36th meeting, on 8 November 2023 (see A/C.6/78/SR.36). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a note verbale dated 11 August 2017 from the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General (A/72/194).

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At its 36th meeting, on 8 November 2023, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Uruguay had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly until the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision under which the General Assembly would decide to defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat in the General Assembly to the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the seventy-ninth session (2024).
