About the event
16–19 September 2025 – Jinja, Uganda
The United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat (UNFFS), in collaboration with the National Forestry Authority of Uganda and partners, is organising a national capacity-building and consultation workshop on Integrated Forest Landscape Restoration (IFLR). The workshop will take place from 16 to 19 September 2025 at the Source of Nile Hotel, Jinja.
Objective
The workshop will build national capacity to plan and implement Integrated Forest Landscape Restoration (IFLR) and will provide a platform to finalise and validate Uganda’s National Integrated Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy (2025–2050). The event will also define a roadmap for the implementation of the strategy, including financing mechanisms, policy recommendations, and stakeholder roles.
Programme
Across four days, the workshop will combine presentations, group work and plenary sessions, covering:
- Introduction to IFLR concepts, guiding principles, and enabling policy frameworks
- The planning cycle for IFLR, including situation and problem analysis, and results frameworks
- Identification and implementation of key interventions and approaches, including landscape- and community-based approaches
- Presentation, discussion and refinement of the draft national IFLR strategy
- Development of a financing strategy to support implementation
- Validation of the national strategy and agreement on follow-up actions
Participants
The workshop will bring together approximately 40 participants, including representatives from:
- Government agencies and national institutions
- Civil society organisations and local communities
- Academia and research institutions
- Development partners and UN agencies
Background
Uganda has experienced significant forest loss in recent decades, with deforestation and degradation driven by human pressures, weak enforcement, and limited resources. According to the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), Uganda has more than 8 million hectares of land with potential for forest landscape restoration.
The National Integrated Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy will serve as a long-term framework (2025–2050) to guide restoration efforts, enhance resilience to climate change, conserve biodiversity, and improve livelihoods for forest-dependent communities. The strategy also contributes to Uganda’s commitments under the Bonn Challenge and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
