The item entitled “Observer status for the International Trade Union Confederation in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventy-fourth session of the Assembly at the request of France, Germany and Turkey (A/74/292). The Assembly has had the item on its agenda annually since the seventy-fourth session (decisions 74/529, 75/535, 76/533 and 77/529).

At its seventy-seventh session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its seventy-eighth session (decision 77/529).

Consideration at the seventy-eighth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 36th meeting, on 8 November 2023 (see A/C.6/78/SR.36). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a letter dated 16 August 2019 from the Chargés d’affaires a.i. of the Permanent Missions of France, Germany and Türkiye to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General (A/74/292).

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 36th meeting, on 8 November 2023, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Germany, on behalf of the sponsors, had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for International Trade Union Confederation in the General Assembly until the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision under which the General Assembly would decide to defer a decision on the request for observer status for the International Trade Union Confederation in the General Assembly to the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the seventy-ninth session (2024).
