Past Presidents
64th Session: Ali Abdussalam Treki
Ali Abdussalam Treki was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly’s 64th session on 10 June 2009. At the time of his election, he was serving as Libya’s Secretary (Minister) of African Union Affairs, a post he has held since 2004.
Ali Abdussalam Treki presided the General Assembly’s 64th session from 15 September 2009 to 14 September 2010.
Also on 10 June 2009, the General Assembly elected 21 Vice-Presidents for the 64th session:
- from the African States: Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, South Africa and the Sudan;
- from the Asian-Pacific States: India, Kazakhstan, Maldives, Nepal and Turkmenistan;
- from the Eastern European States: Slovenia;
- from the Latin American and Caribbean States: Barbados, El Salvador and Venezuela;
- from the Western European and Other States: Belgium and Finland;
- the five permanent members of the Security Council: China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and the United States.
Priorities
The General Assembly considered, in the Plenary and the six Main Committees, a wide ranging agenda covering international peace and security, development, human rights, humanitarian assistance, justice and international law, disarmament, drug control, crime prevention, counter-terrorism and other organizational and administrative issues.
During the sixty-fourth session, particular attention was devoted to the following key issues:
- Development, with a special focus on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including the preparation for the 2010 high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly to take place at the beginning of the 65th session
- The world financial and economic crisis and its impact on development – Follow-up of the June 2009 Conference
- Climate Change
- Revitalization of the General Assembly
- Dialogue among civilization
- Security Council Reform
- System-wide coherence and UN management & Secretariat reform
- Non proliferation and disarmament, including the holding of the NPT Review Conference
