Date: 15 January 2014 Time: 18:30-19:30
Convener: Ebro River Basin Authority and the World Council of Civil Engineers.
Sustainability requires the joint management of water and energy. The successful development of the promising renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, requires the simultaneous building of a proper water storage system in order to stabilize power supply and facilitate the matching of variable electricity demands. However, energy is also an essential requirement for the provision of water services through water abstractions, transport, treatment, distribution, waste water treatment, desalination, water recycling, etc.
Through the discussion of selected examples of good water and energy governance, the panel will explore the feasibility of a smart network to coordinate the objectives of developing renewable energy sources using hydropower for energy storage and the development of local sources, in order to take advantage of the synergies of the water and energy nexus.
