Election of the officers of the Main Committees: election of the Chair and the Bureau of the Sixth Committee at the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly – Item 5

Mr. Edgar Daniel Leal Matta, Vice-Chair of the Sixth Committee, opened the meeting.

The Committee elected, by acclamation, His Excellency Mr. Suriya Chindawongse (Thailand) as its Chair for the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly.

The Committee also elected, by acclamation, Ms. Alis Lungu (Romania), Mr. Jhon Guerra Sansonetti (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela), and Mr. Enrico Milano (Italy) as Vice-Chairs, as well as Mr. Moussa Mohamed Moussa (Djibouti) as the Rapporteur, of the Sixth Committee for the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly.

The Committee thus concluded its work for the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly.

Criminal accountability of United Nations officials and experts on mission – Agenda Item 74

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 76/106 of 9 December 2021, the General Assembly reiterated its decision that the consideration of the report of the Group of Legal Experts, in particular its legal aspects, should be continued during its seventy-seventh session in the framework of a working group of the Sixth Committee.  The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations or members of specialized agencies or of the International Atomic Energy Agency will be invited to participate. The Committee elected Ms. Aahde Lahmiri (Morocco) as the Chair of the Working Group.

Measures to eliminate international terrorism – Agenda Item 112

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 76/121 of 9 December 2021, the Committee established a Working Group on measures to eliminate international terrorism with a view to finalizing the process on the draft comprehensive convention on international terrorism as well as discussions on the item included in its agenda by Assembly resolution 54/110 concerning the question of convening a high-level conference under the auspices of the United Nations. The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations or members of specialized agencies or of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Committee elected Mr.. Rohan Perera (Sri Lanka) as the Chair of the Working Group.

The scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction – Agenda Item 85

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 76/118 of 9 December 2021, the Committee established a Working Group on the scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction to continue to undertake a thorough discussion of the scope and application of universal jurisdiction. The General Assembly decided that the Working Group shall be open to all Member States and that relevant observers to the General Assembly will be invited to participate in the work of the Working Group. The Committee elected Mr. Gustavo Ramírez Baca (Costa Rica) as the Chair of the Working Group.

Responsibility of States for internationally wrongful acts – Agenda Item 73

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 74/180 of 18 December 2019, the Committee established a Working Group on the responsibility of States for internationally wrongful acts to further examine with a view to taking a decision, the question of a convention on responsibility of States for internationally wrongful acts or other appropriate action on the basis of the articles proposed by the International Law Commission. The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations or members of specialized agencies or of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Committee elected Mr. Vinícius Cançado Trindade (Brazil) as the Chair of the Working Group.
